joint Parliamentary Roundtable with the APPG on Migration
The APPG on Adult Social Care was pleased to host a joint parliamentary roundtable with the APPG on Migration to explore the role of migration in supporting the adult social care workforce and the challenges facing the sector.
The discussion brought together parliamentarians, care providers, frontline care workers, workforce experts and policy organisations to examine the contribution of international recruitment to adult social care, workforce shortages, retention challenges and the future of migration policy. Participants also discussed the experiences of migrant care workers, the impact of sponsorship arrangements, and the importance of ensuring that social care remains an attractive and sustainable career.
Attendees heard perspectives from representatives of the Migration Observatory, Labour Mobility Partnerships (LaMP), care providers and migrant care workers, alongside contributions from parliamentarians and sector stakeholders. Discussions highlighted the growing workforce pressures facing adult social care, the demographic challenges driving future demand, and the need for a balanced approach that supports both domestic workforce development and ethical international recruitment.
Following the roundtable, the APPG on Adult Social Care and APPG on Migration Secretariats will be developing a joint white paper drawing on the evidence, experiences and recommendations shared during the discussion. The white paper will explore the key challenges facing the adult social care workforce and set out potential policy solutions to support the long-term sustainability of the sector.
