Group Aim

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Adult Social Care is a forum in the UK Houses of Parliament for members to engage in a cross-party and non-partisan manner with the wider adult social care sector to influence public policy on the reform of the social care system for adults. The group is co-chaired by Eleanor Smith (Labour MP for Wolverhampton South West), David Warburton (Conservative MP for Somerton and Frome) and Crossbench Peer Baroness Greengross.

Objectives of the APPG

  • To increase understanding of what adult social care is.

  • To raise awareness of the value of adult social care; both as a career and for those who experience adult social care services.

  • To promote the need for parity between health and social care.

  • To provide a platform to share the experiences of people using adult social care.

  • To bring together all stakeholders involved in the design, delivery and experience of living with the support of adult social care, to jointly find a solution to the challenges facing the sector.

  • Support the development and implementation of government policy, including the Green Paper.

Overview of the Event

The APPG on Adult Social Care hosted this event to mark its launch in parliament and to discuss the findings from its inaugural inquiry into the future of adult social care. The event will brought together parliamentarians, representatives from local government, providers and charities and well as other key stakeholders from the Care Quality Commission, NHS England, Care England and the Department of Health and Social Care.

Panel Discussion

In line with the focus of the APPG’s inquiry, the panel discussions were on the topic of ‘the future of adult social care’. Panellists were encouraged to discuss challenges in the sector such as the need for an integrated service and for political leadership and consensus in this area, as well as what can done to address these issues. Panellists also raised examples of best practice and areas where access to services is good. The panels lasted for one hour. Each speaker on the panel was given 5 minutes to speak on the topic of ‘the future of adult social care’ and then there was a Q&A with the audience for 40 minutes, led by the Chair of the event, David Brindle.
